Volunteer Opportunities

A wide array of volunteer opportunities are available at the South San Francisco Library. There are numerous ways to contribute to the community through library volunteer work ranging from shelving library books, teaching chess, helping with craft programs, or teaching reading. Volunteers are usually required to make a minimum 6 month commitment; however, middle and high school students earning Community Service credit, must commit to a minimum of 10 hours. The list below is a brief listing of opportunities available in the library and Community Learning Center. For more specific information on a particular volunteer position, call the department as indicated or complete the application/interest form and return to the library and/or Community Learning Center.

Children’s Services: After School Volunteer and Summer Volunteer – shelve books, clean books, photocopy, help staff prepare for craft programs and assist with summer reading club sign-ups and activities. Reader Leaders help a younger child improve reading skills. (Reader Leader is offered at both West Orange and Grand Avenue Libraries). 829-3861.

Project Read: The Mission of Project Read is to help adults reach their literacy goals.
Volunteers are the backbone of the program which offers FREE reading, writing, spelling and grammar help for adults Call 829-3871 for more information and/or to receive a copy of the Application to Attend Project Reads Tutor Training.

Adult Services: Circulation, Reference and/or History Room Aide – shelve library materials, photocopy, look for items working from a printout of titles, light house keeping (dust, water plants, etc.), maintain newspaper clipping files and other tasks as the need arises. West Orange, 829-3860; Grand, 877-6617. Grand Library has periodic openings for Chess Instructor and/or Junior Chess Tournament Arbiter.

Community Learning Center (CLC): Volunteers are needed to help with after school homework programs, Adult English classes, Adult computer classes and drop-in labs; and Creative activities for children. 877-8540.
