HELPING ADULTS TO READ
HELPS THEIR FAMILIES

Our Mission
Project Read assists adults and their families in reaching their literacy goals.

I felt really good on Saturday after the women's group workshop.  I never realized that taking the time to do something for myself would make me feel so good and happy.  In fact, because of the women's group, I am going to treat myself every morning and take that extra little bit of time for me.  I can say that if you feel good about yourself, you feel really good about life. -  Elvia Dabbagh, Adult Learner

Who We Are
We are adult learners, volunteer tutors, and program staff dedicated to lifelong learning. We assist individuals who live in Colma, Daly City, San Bruno, and South San Francisco.

With the help of a volunteer tutor, learners become more independent at home, at work, and in their communities. They experience the joy of:

  • Getting jobs to support their families
  • Reading their first book
  • Writing their own checks
  • Making informed decisions about their healthcare
  • Reading their prescriptions and instructions
  • Voting for the first time
  • Reading books to their children and grandchildren
  • Obtaining their driver’s licenses
  • Passing the GED
  • Getting accepted into college

And that's only the beginning!

What We Do
Currently, in our local communities, one out of every five adults has trouble with reading, writing, spelling and/or math. What are we doing to help?

Since 1985, over 3,060 volunteer tutors, trained by Project Read, have given over 195,000 hours of services to help over 3,950 adult learners. People have accomplished a wide variety of tasks from writing a shopping list to reading a prescription bottle to passing the high school equivalency test (GED).

We match English-speaking adults, over the age of 17, who are out of high school with volunteer tutors to improve their reading, writing, spelling, and math skills. Tutoring pairs usually meet twice a week for one to two hours each session, in libraries, coffee shops, recreation centers, bookstores, churches and other convenient public locations.
