Youth Volunteer Opportunities

Youth Volunteers 6th - 12th Grades

MAIN LIBRARY:

After School Volunteers
One two-hour shift a week from 4 to 6 pm; weekdays only

Summer Volunteer
Schedules are flexible during library hours; weekdays only

Reader Leader
Summer and school year reading buddy volunteers with a 1st – 5th grader for 1 hour per week for 6-8 weeks.

Teen Advisory Board
Teens meet quarterly with Teen Librarian

After School and Summer Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 10 hours of volunteer service. Sample Duties: After School and Summer volunteers shelve books, clean books, photocopy, help staff prepare for craft programs, and assist with summer reading club sign-ups and activities.

Teen Advisory Board members meet with Teen Librarian periodically to plan, decorate, and assist Teen and Children’s events. TAB members also advise the Teen Librarian about popular books and magazines to add to the library. TAB members can apply to one of the Youth Librarians for more information. Stop by the Children's desk or email ssfpljuv@plsinfo.org.

To volunteer for any of the above three programs, fill out a Youth Volunteer Application form, available at the bottom of this page, and bring it to the Children’s Services desk in the Main Library. A parent or legal guardian must sign a Volunteer Waiver and Placement Form that is available at the library.

The Reader Leader program is offered at the Main and Grand Avenue Branch Libraries during the summer. Middle School and High School volunteers may sign up with Children’s Services. Training sessions are held the first week of summer vacation. Reader leaders are assigned one child to work with during the program. Reading pairs meet for one hour per week at designated times.

GRAND AVENUE BRANCH LIBRARY

Story Time in Spanish: Volunteers must be at least 13 years old, fluent in Spanish, and able to lead a group of youngsters in various activities. Storytellers read or tell stories and engage the children in activities such as songs, games, and crafts. For more information call 877-8532.

Reader Leader Program: Middle School and High School students buddy up with a 1st - 5th grade student who needs help with reading skills during the summer and after school.

COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER

Homework Club- Adults and High School students are welcome to volunteer in the after school homework assistance program for third to fifth graders.

Office Assistance- Adults and High School students are welcome to volunteer with routine office tasks.

Children’s Activities- Adults, Middle and /or High School students can assist children 3-12 years old with creative learning activities while their parents attend class.

Community Service

Some students are required to perform community service for their schools or other agencies. Any of our youth volunteer programs is appropriate for community service credit.
